Street Preventative Maintenance Program

The Town of Westover Hills has 7.6 miles of streets, and the Public Works Department uses various strategies to improve and maintain the road surfaces. Scheduled preventative maintenance helps prolong the lifespan of these surfaces by protecting them from the effects of aging, cracking, deterioration, and water infiltration.

What street treatments do we apply?

Our five main treatment types include overlays, micro surfacing, slurry seal, crack seal and fog seal. The Public Works Department tracks pavement inventory and applied performance solutions.

Overlay

This is a process in which a two inch layer of asphalt is removed from the road and replaced with a new two inch layer of asphalt. This new layer functions as a wear surface for traffic and my last up to ten years depending on traffic volumes.

Micro Surfacing

This is a treatment in which a 3/4 inch layer of asphalt is applied along with special chemicals and then rolled in place to provide a new wear surface. This process may last from three to five years.

Slurry Seal and Fog Seal

A layer of liquid asphalt emulsion is spread on to the road to fill cracks and voids and to improve the water intrusion prevention characteristics of the road.

Crack Sealing

This is a thick layer of rubberized asphalt that is applied directly over cracks and seams in the road to improve water proofing in larger cracks that cannot be attained by slurry or fog sealing. This process is usually used in conjunction with Micro Surfacing, Slurry Sealing, and Fog Sealing.
